The Lunar New Year Weekend of 2023

It is Lunar New Year, the new year celebration of many Asian households (at least, my family/local community has just wrapped up celebrating yesterday). I don’t know if I’m at an age where I’m just more aware of how much I don’t know or if I just never really know anything culturally, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot this week.

For example, one of my friends that I’ve made in the grad program is Filipino, and she was telling me about how there are also elements attached to the zodiac animal of the year. This year is apparently the year of the water rabbit. Then, the computer in my apartment complex is the thing that informed me that for the Vietnamese, this is actually the year of the cat. I originally thought it was just clickbait, but when I asked my parents, they said it was true.

So this just might be the year of learning for me. Today, we’re going to dive into my weekend, which has reminded me to be grateful for how lucky I am to live the life that I have.

Life Is Too Short to Not Eat What You Want

My boyfriend has this joke where the only time I’m not talking is when I’m eating. Then when someone asked him for advice in getting a girlfriend, his answer was something along the lines of, “You play with her hair and you give her ice cream. Then she realizes that she might like you as much as she likes ice cream and then you go from there.” That might not have been an exact quote, but my point in telling all this is that I really love and appreciate food

How I’m Handling The Stress of Being Asian Right Now

With everything going on, I have a lot of thoughts on the matter as an Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAIP) person, and there is a lot of pain and hurt from that statement and everything else. In light of the recent events in Atlanta, and the way that Asians have increasingly become the target of hate crimes in the past year, I wanted to take the time to talk about what my experience has been like as an Asian American.

What Being an Ox Says About Me

As I prepare for the Lunar New Year with my family, I have to say that I’m very grateful for the chance at what will feel like a fresh start. While I know that the energy and rough times that encompass my 2021 won’t just go away, I am happy to spend time with my family and have something to look forward to.This particular new year is exciting because it is the year of the Ox, and that happens to be my Zodiac sign. What does that mean? What does that say about me? I’d love to discuss it further.
