Okay, so I originally wrote this post to be published on Sunday for Substack. I finally joined Substack, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to utilize the platform. I thought it would be a great spot for a weekly report of things that I am sharing and media that I am consuming. However, after exploring the platform for a bit and toggling with it, I find that I prefer the layout here than on Substack, at least for this purpose.
I didn’t want this to go to total waste, so disregard the day. The idea here is that I was playing with all the summaries and parts of my week, playing off of the sum of all the parts saying. The parts will be recapping things I’ve done on different corners of the internet, and the sums are different things I’m turning over in my brain. Maybe we will like it enough to continue doing it here, or maybe it will shift and change into something else somewhere else.
Parts: “Embracing the Idea of Naïve Art” on Kristi My
For about a decade now, I’m actually run my own little blog here, so if you follow me, you didn’t miss this one. But since the intention here was to do a round up, I would be remiss not to include it.
This past week, I went and wrote about how my sister has opened me up to the idea of creating my own art. She did this by telling me about the idea of naïve art, which is art created by someone who isn’t formally trained in the art.
It was so cool to me to learn that there was a word for this, and so I’ve been embracing this idea the more it dances around in my brain. It’s also just a more fun way of living, now that I’ve felt more free to create and just enjoy. This week, I’m especially pleased with a little junk journal prompt I scrapped together to showcase my favorite season.
Sums: “Why am I doing this? I don’t even like this.” By Valaria Lipvetsky (Substack)
I started following Valaria on Instagram last year, and I have found that I really love seeing her content and tips for creators. It’s fun to see her humor and thoughts on everyday life. A true influencer, just sharing about her life in a fun way.
This week, she shared on Instagram this post on Substack, so now I am following her here as well. Maybe the message might sound straight forward, but since so many people seem to be living their life on autopilot these days, I really appreciated the messaging. We really should take a moment before we do things to wonder why we do them, and whether or not it is adding to life in anyway.
Parts: “In Defense of The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez”
Last year, I became invested in reading all the Abby Jimenez books, and this was the last one I was able to get from the library. I really enjoyed reading it on my own, so I was going to write a review about it. Then I went online and saw some negative discourse around the book. The more I looked into and thought about it, the more I felt like I didn’t agree with the general discourse that was happening around the book. So I wrote up a defense.
This website was one that I had designed when I was in graduate school, and I go back and forth about hopping on a Wix premium plan again. For those of you who use Wix, can you share your pros and cons with using the platform?
Sums: The Devil Wears Prada 2
For date night this week, I convinced Asanti to watch The Devil Wears Prada 2. I say convinced because he was trying to get us to watch Animal Farm. Normally, I just go along with whatever he picks when it comes to movies, but this time there was something I actually had an interest in seeing. So I won out, and we watched The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Even though I picked it out, his sister ended up being much more passionate about the movie than I was. Both Asanti and I walked out thinking that the movie was just okay, while his mother and sister thought that the movie was very good. I thought that there could’ve been more character development, but they very much appreciated the messaging.
Parts: “6 Things I Netflixed in Vietnamese” on An Voi Sau
My Grandma moved in with me months ago, and since then my sister and I have been trying to bond with her in anyway we can. It became a lot easier for us when we discovered that Netflix has Vietnamese subbing on some of their content. So for Asian American Pacific Islander month, I thought I would collate a list of our favorites on a food blog that was inspired by her.
Sums: The K-Type Collective on Substack
The thing that finally got me to hop on Substack was that Keltie Knight of E! News and The LadyGang launched a coaching group on here, and I knew I had to join. I am such a loyal fan of hers, and am anticipating the release of her book (which you can preorder here). So now I’m here on Substack because of Keltie and the LadyGang, and I can’t wait to have some fun here… At least, once I figure out what I’m going to use it for.
Parts: Favorite Instagram of the Week
Out of all the social media platforms, I think I am the most active on Instagram. While I am probably not the greatest creator, I still continue to post on there anyway, and I have a fun time. So I thought I would once a week share what my favorite post that I make in a week is.
I have to say that the one I am most proud of is one that I made about me and my dog, Damian. After obsessively listening to the new Noah Kahan album, and seeing an edit that Becca Tilley made of her and her fiancée Hayley Kiyoko, I wanted to also do a cut to the lyrics. Except, in my case, I found the words more relatable to me and my dog. So it became my favorite post that I made.
And that is it. How was it? Is there a better way of doing a round up that you prefer consuming? What else would you like to see in a round up? Let me know in the comments below!
Thank you for taking the time to read through this post. If you enjoyed it, please take the time to like it, comment your thoughts, and to share it with your friends. And of course, if you want to get updates of every time that I put out stuff like this, please make sure to subscribe.
Love Always,
Kristi My ❤
