I’m truly blessed to have the privilege of starting a new job right after graduation. One of the questions that I was asked while in the interview was, “What are some hobbies you do in your free time?” While I’m pretty sure my answer to this question is not the reason I got that job, I wanted to focus on it since this month is National Hobby Month.
I can also say that my boss did not forget my answer, because she occasionally brings up parts of it in conversation. Keep reading to find out what my answers are and how they play into who I am.
Spending Time with My Sisters
Being the oldest of four girls, my sisters mean so much to me. We grew up together, but I also feel like I had a major contribution when it came to raising them. While my life started out as a single child for two and a half years, I’m at this point in life where I can’t imagine what my life would look like without them. What I believe this says about me is that I have strong family values.
Spending Time with My Dog
I got my dog in 2017, and he gives me a sense of comfort that I didn’t have before. Damian the Wigglebutt is not an emotional support animal, but he is the insurance policy that makes sure I smile at least once a day, every day that he’s been in my life. Having him also guarantees that I get out of the house to go for a walk. This is also the one hobby that I mentioned that my boss brings up every now and then. Something I think being a ‘dog person’ says about me is that I’m a spunky, friendly person who loves life and people.
Cooking, and Learning to Cook
When I said this, my boss was quick to mention how she doesn’t really know how to cook. It made me smile, because I said that I didn’t know how to cook either, but that I’m always open to learning and that’s what I was doing during quarantine. I would like to believe that a response like that looks very good in an interview, because it shows a desire to learn and grow as a person. Cooking is something I love to do because I love taste testing as I cook, and it makes me feel close to my grandma. I’ve mentioned this before, but I even started a food blog because of it. Reading and Writing
This one seems very obvious, because I started this blog because of my love of words. My love of writing came from my love of reading, and those two can’t be separated at this point. They also help me communicate well, which is an essential skill for any job that involves working with people. Being an English major with a love of reading and writing, I have the skills to read accurately, write clearly, and think analytically, but I am also a person that knows empathy, is open-minded, and continues to be curious about the world.
Playing with Nintendo Products
This is the one hobby that I didn’t mention in my job interview, because I didn’t think it was the relevant one. I basically grew up on Nintendo, starting with my life in Chicago when my cousin gave me his GameBoy Color. From there, I moved to Florida, got a GameBoy Advance, the D.S., and so on and so forth. I made sure to visit the Nintendo store while in New York City. Playing Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Switch kept me and my sisters busy throughout quarantine, and Just Dance kept us active while being inside. I’d like to think that confessing this has made me appear like a cute little nerd, but you tell me.
