My 70’s Outfit Inspiration

At the end of the day, my outfit really came together for the 70’s event, but would you believe me if I said I really struggled to find something to wear? It’s true; I went through about two-thirds of the mall before I found something I liked, and even then I pitter-pattered around the store for about 30 more minutes feeling unsure about it.

For today, I thought I would go through my thought process in choosing my outfit for the event and how I got really lucky at the end of the day.

Researching

When my friend invited me to the 70’s themed party, the first thing that came to mind was That’s ’70s Show. I wasn’t sure if that was completely accurate, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to wear sunglasses and an afro, so I decided that I would try and do some research.

When it comes to fashion and visual inspiration, I think everyone knows that Pinterest is the best place to go. So that’s where I went, and I have attached my board here in case you needed inspiration too.

My Struggle

So wandering through the mall, I might have been struggling because I was being picky. While it seems like a lot of old fashion seems to be cycling through now, I didn’t want to buy something that I would only wear once. The thing about the ’70s is that it seems to be a lot of brown, or a lot of loud and bright patterns. Neither of these things are really my style, so I was having a hard time finding something I wanted.

I saw a bunch of accessories, like butterfly clips and flower headbands, but I didn’t want to buy accessories that might not match the outfit I ended up with. So I was waiting and slowly believing that I might not find anything.

Forever21 Has Some Nifty Threads

The first thing that I need to say before getting into my outfit is that I am not at the point of being sponsored yet, so everything that I am going to say is genuinely what I think and believe. If it ever happens, I will let you know, but for now this blog is entirely run on me, my thoughts, and my feelings. So now I’m going to say that Forever21 isn’t my favorite place to shop, because the quality typically doesn’t last past three wears for me, and I know that it’s a fast fashion company, which isn’t the best stuff for the environment. Now maybe I’m just really rough on my clothes, and maybe that has changed since I last checked, but that’s why I don’t typically turn to Forever21 for clothing.

However, I walked into the store and found the pants first when browsing the racks. I loved that the material was light and that the color wasn’t too bold. My only problem was that there was only one left, and I have gained enough weight that I wasn’t sure if I could squeeze into a medium right now. So I went through the store, and yes I found other things, but I wasn’t sure if I liked them as much as I liked the pants.

After a while of wandering, I caved and decided to coordinate a whole outfit with the pants. It came down to two different tops, but I ended up going with the one-shoulder green top that you saw in my Instagram post. Part of it was because the green top was on sale, and the other part is that it was more fun and just ended up fitting better.

So as you can see, I decided to go shopping without a bra on this particular day, which also might have played a role in my shopping struggles. But this nude tank was also an option I was grappling with, and I decided against it because it was kind of tame, and also so perfectly matched my skin tone that it might have been as if I wasn't wearing a shirt.

Last Minute Things

Because we had already gone through most of the mall, I didn’t have time to really get the accessories that I wanted. Maybe that’s a good thing, because the shoes I wore ended up being old ones from high school graduation. I say it’s a good thing, because after grooving the night away, my shoes were pretty much destroyed, and I would’ve been a bit bummed if I ruined a new pair of shoes. However, if you want your own pair, these wedges are very similar to the Jessica Simpson ones that I wore. The straps on mine seem a bit thicker, and again this post isn’t sponsored, but I do typically love the shoes I buy from Jessica Simpson. This is also probably a good reminder that I want to read her memoir at some point.

Anyway, on the day of, I left work later than I wanted to. So I didn’t really have as much time getting ready that I would’ve liked, and I basically got changed in my car before showing up to my friend’s place. I barely did my makeup, and I feel lucky that I showed up with enough time for one of them to offer to do my hair.

I am going to confess that I never understood how a waver worked before they did my hair. In my home, I have a flatiron and a curling wand. So somewhere in my mind, I thought you were either born with naturally wavy hair, or you braided your hair while wet and then it looked like that when you took it down the next morning. So needless to say, I will be investing in a hair waver now. And maybe a new pair of white heels.

Look at how worn down they are! They were in a pretty decent condition when I found them, but it seems like they have boogied for the last time. How sad.
